How you can help for the Holidays

More Mecosta County children are facing hunger than ever before. Today over 60% of Mecosta County children struggle with hunger. During December 5th – December 12th, 2014 we will be holding our Peanut Butter and Jelly Plus Drive. Angels of Action is now feeding 611 children each weekend with a backpack of food. Each weekend these children receive a bag with 2 breakfast items, 1 milk, 1 juice, 2 lunch items and 2 snacks. Angels of Action provides these children with peanut butter and jelly three times each year. Once at the beginning of the school year, at Christmas time, and at the end of the school year.

Peanut butter is among one of the most expensive foods for us to purchase in large quantities. However, it is one of the most sought after due to it’s high protein and beneficial fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated oils). And what’s peanut butter without jelly?

This is a plus drive…..Here’s what other items we are in need of :

Small hairbrushes, small deodorants and chapstick. These items are for our “Little Angel Bags”. These are hygiene kits that are given out on a as needed basis to each of our seven schools.

On the Shoulders of Our Soldiers: the Miracle Makers
When we ponder how the United States of America became the beacon of individual freedom it is today, we conclude that we owe it all to the courageous souls that preceded us. All of us stand on the shoulders of our soldiers and leaders who fought on behalf of the cause for individual freedom. From the Boston Tea Party, to the Revolutionary War, through both World Wars to our presence in the Middle East today, our soldiers strove to provide unbridled individual freedom never before experienced in the history of mankind. Their efforts truly accomplished nothing short of a miracle. Because our soldiers and veterans placed their lives on the line, we enjoy a rich and fulfilling life where all of us are free to pursue our dreams. Angels of Action wants to follow in their boot tracks, although much more humbly, by providing a helping hand to the impoverished children in our own backyard.

Angels of Action is a local non –profit organization that provides weekend food bags to Mecosta County K-4 youngsters who do not have enough to eat. Did you know that 60% of the children sitting in classrooms across our community are enrolled in the federally subsidized lunch program? For many of the Mecosta County youngsters, this is their only source of good nutrition. Research indicates there is a direct link between sound nutrition intake and the ability to absorb and retain information that results in positive school performance and a healthy sense of well-being. Angels of Action is attempting to accomplish the daunting feat of making sure no Mecosta County child goes to bed hungry on weekends. We filled 611 weekend backpacks with nutritious, shelf-stable food for Mecosta County students last school year.

Our goal is to fill at least 700 backpacks by the end of the 2014–2015 school year in Mecosta, Big Rapids, Morley-Stanwood and Barryton elementary schools.

You can help us build on the success of our program by indicating whether you would like to donate to our General Fund or to our Endowment Fund. Whichever you choose, up to $.50 on the dollar will be matched. Leave your legacy and feed the future by helping us echo the actions of our soldiers; they made freedom possible and fought to make our country the best it can be. Angels of Action seeks to embrace that freedom and follow their lead by making our community the best it can be. By feeding Mecosta County’s children, Angels of Action is helping the children grow up to realize their potential and be all they can be.

In honor of Veterans Day, we encourage you to donate in the name of a soldier or veteran. We will include his/her name on our website along with their name, and any other information you would like to include.

Game On: Angels of Action vs. Childhood Hunger in Mecosta County

November 19, 2013

11am-6pm at the Holiday Inn in Big Rapids.

GameOnBaseball_scaled_1

Baseball trivia fans: Try this one on for size!  On May 15, 1941, pitcher Eddie Smith gave up an RBI hit in a game between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees.  Who drove in the run and why is this important?

Answer: This was the first day of Joe DiMaggio’s historic 56 consecutive game hit streak.  Ever since Babe Ruth’s 60-homerun record was broken, the Yankee Clipper’s achievement remains baseball’s most honored record.

We at Angels of Action are seeking to imitate Joltin’ Joe’s famous hit streak by beginning one of our own.  We can help end childhood hunger in our community- one backpack at a time. What happens when they go home and there is little or no food to eat- especially over the weekends?  That is where Angels of Action and “Backpack Blessings” come up to bat.  We filled 425 weekend backpacks with nutritious, shelf-stable food for K-4 Mecosta County students last school year.  Our goal is to fill at least 600 backpacks during the 2013-14 school year in Mecosta, Big Rapids and Barryton elementary schools.  As funds permit, we plan to expand to Morley-Stanwood.

Angels of Action is teaming up with the Mecosta County Community Foundation (MCCF) to build on our success.  MCCF is offering organizations that would benefit from the long-term investment of an endowment fund, an opportunity to start it on Match Day. A “Build-a-Fund” program would allow organizations to begin with a smaller investment toward an endowment fund, and the foundation would give them five years to build up the $10,000 minimum required to start an endowment fund. (An endowment fund is made up of gifts and bequests that are subject to a requirement that the principal be maintained intact and invested to create a source of income for an organization in perpetuity, or for a defined period of time, or until sufficient assets have been accumulated to achieve a designated purpose.)

Match Day 2013

November 19th, 2013
11am-6pm
at the Holiday Inn in Big Rapids

This year, Match Day season stretches from now through November 19, 2013.  Any donations received during that time will be matched up to 50% by MCCF. This is Angels of Action’s Field of Dreams; we trust as we begin to build it, “you will come.” Our goal is to build an endowment fund to show how strong our TEAM is and that we intend to stay in the record books.  I believe many of you would like to help us build on the success we have with our program.  You can now do that by joining our team and giving to our endowment fund for Match Day on November 19.

Unfortunately, childhood hunger isn’t going away anytime soon, and we want to make sure our program and TEAM is here to help these children in need.  We are hoping that you will join our TEAM to help ensure the future of our youngsters by contributing to our endowment fund.   Leave your legacy and feed the future by helping us hit this one out of the park.  Joltin’ Joe’s record was 56 consecutive successes. We want to be successful for 56 months – even 56 years. As long as there are hungry children, we will be filling backpacks. An endowment fund will ensure that we can.

You can help by doing the following:

  • Mail your donation to Angels of Action P.O. Box 1020 Big Rapids Mi  49346
  • Visit us at our booth on Match Day November 19th at The Holiday Inn in Big Rapids from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and bring your donation.
  • Visit our website to find out more information:  www.angelsofaction.org

Donations for Match Day will be for our general operating budget. Any amount will help us in our quest to feed youngsters in our own backyard.  You can sponsor a child for an entire school year for $195.00.
